Electrical Stimulation for Denervated Muscle

A comprehensive guide to understanding, treating, and managing denervated muscle. Based on the European RISE programme and over 50 years of clinical experience.

What Is This Site About?

Since 2011, Anatomical Concepts has worked with clients who use electrical stimulation on denervated muscles. The cause of the denervation could be spinal cord injury or peripheral nerve injury of some type.

In many cases, the intention is to use electrical stimulation to preserve muscle bulk and tissue quality for the long term. In some cases, reinnervation may be expected, and the intention is to preserve muscles whilst it takes place.

The use of electrical stimulation in these cases remains relatively unknown. It requires stimulation patterns that differ from those used in common applications such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).

This website is an educational resource from Anatomical Concepts. Director Derek Jones, PhD, MBA, has written the content which forms the subject of this website. At present, there are two versions of the text, along with videos, downloads and other resources. To access the clinical material, we request an email address.
